WELCOME TO THE U14s
We welcome all boys aged between 13 and 14 (school year 9) who are looking to play rugby.
If you are interested or would like further information please contact Tony (Team Manager), firstname.lastname@example.org and 07887 675794
We train on Sunday mornings from 10am and also Thursday evenings from 6.30pm. The season runs from the start of September until the end of April.
The U14 teams also have a number of fixtures throughout the season with local clubs.
We have a strong coaching group, lead by our Head Coach Jason. All of the coaches are appropriately qualified with the RFU, and DBS checked, to ensure a consistently high quality of coaching that always places safety and enjoyment to the fore.
In the interests of safety and appropriate behaviour, we would remind parents that they (or another nominated adult) are required to remain at pitch side during the training sessions / matches.
Squad Selection Policy and Criteria for U14s
At the start of the season we will sub-divide our total U13 squad of approximately 40 players for forthcoming matches and some training sessions. Whilst some skills training can be undertaken with the whole squad, we find that mixing abilities does not work for everyone - the less able players are unable to keep up with the more able and conversely the better players become frustrated with their team-mates. However, in order that players do not become unfairly pigeon-holed, the coaches will hold regular review sessions at which squads may be updated, particularly in the early months of the season. As we get into the New Year we expect the squads will have settled down, although we'll continue to review them from time to time as abilities change so quickly at this age
This season we expect to run two squads of approximately 20 players each. Though much of the training will be for the whole squad, there will be times when the different teams are playing in different tournaments.
The selection criteria adopted by the Club through each of the age groups will be: Ability, Attitude and Attendance.
Competition is inherent in rugby, and whilst we strive to ensure that all players are included, good performance will be recognised and rewarded where possible. Whilst turning in a good performance is the best way to catch the coach’s eye, ability alone does not guarantee a place. All players are encouraged to aspire to reach the top, whilst those already there must guard against resting on laurels. Junior rugby is all about player development, and we hope to help all players reach their full potential. As we know every child develops at different rates and it’s important that we take account of this. We'll also take the decision to rest players where appropriate and will rotate starting line ups within squads from time to time.
Rugby is a game that requires courage, discipline and respect for others. We aim to reinforce and foster this in all players, emphasising and encouraging positive behaviour in all players. Ill-discipline, foul play or other breaches of the good players code will not be tolerated, and will be dealt with appropriately. If you can't listen, you can't play and this applies to fellow team mates as well as the coaches. Rugby is a team sport and no individual is more valuable than the team.
A record of attendance is being kept each week, as is a record of who is selected for competitive fixtures/tournaments. In this way, we aim to ensure that all players have an equal opportunity to play at an appropriate level. No player can expect to play in every game. Furthermore, just as no player can expect a place in the team just by turning up on the day, commitment will be rewarded with opportunity. Therefore it is crucial that you ensure you register each week.
In order for us to run effective training sessions it will be helpful to know who will be there each Sunday. This allows us to select teams for both competitive and training matches in advance and to design the training content and squads around those players who will be there. To this end if you know you can not attend a particularly weekend it would be great if you can email or let one of the coaching team know in advance if at all possible.
